1,8-Diazabicyclo [5,4,0] undec-7-ene (DBU) is a highly sterically hindered amidine organic base whose two adjacent nitrogen atoms can stabilize protonation sites.

As a non nucleophilic organic base, the reaction involving DBU can effectively avoid side reactions caused by the nucleophilicity of the base, but there are also a few literature reports that DBU is used as a nucleophilic base. Due to its affordability, good solubility in organic solvents, and easy recovery, DBU is often used as a catalyst, complex ligand, and nucleophilic or non nucleophilic base in organic reactions.

Application of DBU

The main use of DBU is as an excellent organic base deacidifying agent for drug synthesis.

It is widely used in the production of semi synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics, such as the reaction of ammonia and dichloroethane in the presence of DBU to produce piperazine.

DBU can also be used as a polyurethane catalyst, a hydrogen ring resin promoter, a rust inhibitor, and so on.

It should be pointed out that DBU itself has excellent thermal sensitivity, but its activity is still high at room temperature or even low temperature, and it cannot be used as a delay catalyst in polyurethane/epoxy resin. It is recommended to use DBU derivatives instead of DBU as a delay catalyst. For example, DBU derivatives such as DY-2910 can be used in polyurethane adhesives, coatings, microporous elastomers, epoxy anhydride systems, and other fields

As a product in the same series, 1,5-diazabicyclo [4,3,0] non 5-ene (DBN) is used as a polyurethane curing agent to manufacture non yellowing polyurethane films; Epoxy resin curing accelerator; Fluorine rubber; Catalysts or reactants for organic synthesis.
